Sunrise workout in Santa Monica


Life in Los Angeles is pretty amazing, especially when you’re just a short walk from the beach! Almost every day, I head over to Palisades Park in Santa Monica and do a few workouts with a beautiful view overlooking the ocean. 

I like to start most days with a quick “wakeup workout” that follows this basic formula:

  • 3 or 4 bodyweight exercises 
  • 3 or 4 rounds
  • Declining reps in each round (for example, “21-15-9” or “15-12-9-6”)

For this workout, I chose:

  • 3 exercises: modified mountain climbers (outside knee), squat jumps and forearm plank holds
  • 3 rounds
  • 21-15-9 rep scheme for the mountain climbers and the squat jumps, and with a 60 second plank hold to complete each round

This workout totaled 45 mountain climbers (on each side), 45 squat jumps and 3 minutes of plank holds, which was enough to get my heart rate to an average of 150 bpm over the 6 and a half minutes it took me to complete. You can see in the video that I got a little tired at the end of that last round and my plank technique started to fade, but that’s something I’ll need to focus on next time! 

After this quick full-body workout, I was wide awake and warmed up for the rest of my fitness routine!
